A rare black Canada Lynx, a variation of the normally light brownish-gray species, was captured on camera near Whitehorse, Yukon, marking the first such footage. Recorded by researcher Thomas Jung, the lynx’s distinctive black coat was seen from 50 meters before fleeing from a barking dog. This discovery,
published in the journal Mammalia, is significant as no black Canada Lynx had been photographed before. While rare, experts suggest the dark coat may hinder the lynx’s ability to camouflage in snowy environments. This footage provides valuable insight into the species’ coat color variations and evolutionary adaptations.
