The food we eat is vital to our health, and moderation is key. Some foods, however, can be dangerous. One such dish is Koi Pla, a Thai salad made from raw fish, herbs, and lemon juice. The fish, caught in the Mekong region, often carries parasitic flatworms that can lead to liver cancer. This disease kills around 20,000 people annually.
Dr. Narong Khuntikeo, whose parents died from liver cancer linked to Koi Pla, has tried to raise awareness about its dangers. Despite his efforts, many locals continue to eat the dish. A 2017 study showed that 80% of residents in the affected regions had the parasite, but most remain indifferent to the risks, saying, “There are many ways to die.” This highlights the tension between tradition and health concerns.
