A top Russian official warned the Trump administration against attempting to reclaim control of the Panama Canal, following Trump’s comments during his inauguration about taking back the strategic waterway. Trump has repeatedly suggested that the U.S. should regain control of the canal,
which was transferred to Panama in 1999. Russia’s Alexander Shchetinin emphasized the importance of respecting Panama’s sovereignty and the canal’s international legal status. Meanwhile, Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino firmly rejected any notion of U.S. control, asserting that the canal remains Panama’s territory. Trump has also raised the idea of purchasing Greenland, which is under Danish control.
